Abstract

Description

The first effort to write a comprehensive history of the license plates of the world, beginning with a hypothesized origin of vehicle registration in the Roman Empire and moving through the registration, at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, of automobiles in Europe and the United States. License plate design, colors, and manufacture are discussed, followed by a discussion of license plates organized by continent and then country. Entries include number of vehicles registered, design and color of individual plates, issuing authority, prefix and suffix codes, and other information. This is followed by black and white illustrations and photographs of representative license plates, license plates of the United States from 1912, New York license plate types from 1957, New York license plates from 1905 to 1957, and photographs and descriptions of the international license plate collection of H. Bogart Seaman. First edition published as an article in the October 1957 issue of The Automobilist.
